What is This Tour About?

  • A deep dive into the cultural realms of Vietnam by night.
  • A trial of the five senses over five locations.
  • Highly adaptable to fit your group's interests and requirements.

The original concept of the Hue Grit Tour was ultimately the anti-tour! This is our middle finger to the tourist industry. No more artificial environments, no more guest mollycuddling. People want a real cultural experience and that doesn’t come with glitter and sequins.

The original Grit Tours sets out to explore various aspects of the cultural capital of Vietnam through the hours of evening air. The former Vietnamese capital makes for the ideal location in exploring local cultures via the five senses.

So the overarching question is ‘what do Vietnamese people do at night?’ and the grit tour responds with accompanying you to a variety of locations that set out to give you new experiences, elicit a better understanding of Vietnam and most of all, do something that is not on offer anywhere else in Vietnam.

Where We Go (Example Itinerary)

We will meet in the former residence of one of Vietnam’s greatest song writers. After breaking the ice, we’ll talk about the life of Vietnam’s Bob Dylan and our itinerary for the evening.

Passing over the An Cựu River and through the Phủ Cam church, we head to the Christian district to visit a popular fortune teller to learn our fates.

We put each guest through a short visit to a massage parlour frequented by local clientele with a quick tour of this unique premises.

After addressing the mind and the body, we’ll head for some food at a popular Vietnamese beer hall, a cornerstone of Vietnamese society. We’ll order an array or beer-friendly food as well as try some different Hue-based drinks. While we’re there, we’ll get you some survival beerhall language and etiquette so you know your way around next time you are at a Vietnamese beerhall.

The natural progression from the beer hall in Vietnamese nightlife is karaoke! Take on your fellow guests at a 16-bit rendition of the Beatles or get to together for a Queen harmony in a karaoke booth perfect for LED seizures and aural violations.

To come best prepared, check youtube for a karaoke version of a song of your choice.

We compelte the tour at the train station introduce and explain some of the more traditional legal highs in Vietnam including the tobacco pipe, betelnut and a local variant on a sailor game.

The Details - How to Prepare for the Tour

All costs for food, drinks and transport are covered on this tour. We cannot afford to cover bottles of liquor if that is a specific request for this tour.

Unless you have paid for your tour in advance, please prepare for the tour fee to pay at the meeting point. We only accept Vietnamese Dong. If you have any trouble with converting cash or finding an ATM, please let us know in advance and we will give you advice for this.

Be sure to include any allergies, dislikes or special requests with your order. Although we try to cater for everyone, there are some things that are difficult to avoid.

Vegetarian and vegan food is hard to cater for on this tour unless the entire group agrees on eating meat free for the meal. There are some dishes available at the restaurant(s) on this tour but they don’t generally do service for vegetarians or vegans looking for great Vietnamese food.

The walking on this tour is generally short and we mostly take private transport to each location. The roads are uneven and can catch you off-guard. Please wear suitable footwear.

If it is hot, wear cool clothing. If it is raining, wear clothing that dry quickly. These things are not essential since we spend most of the tour undercover but are advised.

We will provide umbrellas if it is raining.

Mosquitoes can be an issue at certain times of the year. If you are not wearing clothing that covers your legs and ankles, we advise you to use mosquito spray.

We have been told to encourage the vendors we visit to suit our clients but that goes against our ‘staged authenticity’ principle.

We’re keeping it real!

That means some of our locations are minimal on facilities such as WCs and air conditioning. Furthermore, hygiene can be below western expectations. Most people are not troubled by this while others bring hand sanitizer and toilet paper.

Our lovely hosts are great at facilitating their guests and do what they can and we will also do our best to point out available facilities at each location.

Transport after the tour is included providing it is within 2km of the concluding location.

Transport to the meeting point is not included but we can pick you up for an additional fee.

The concept of this tour is to explore environments and activities that you may not be familiar with. For some people, that takes a little courage and maybe a hand to hold. Other people don’t raise eyebrows. Everyone is different. We’re there to give gentle encouragement and like any good host, we will go first if we must, Just Ask
