Hue Grit Art Tour
Our guide takes you on a modern arts tour of Hue reflecting on the past 200 years of Vietnamese art history.
What is This Tour About?
Vietnamese art is often overlooked when considering the various arts produced in South East Asia. With the Hue Grit Art Tour, we intend to disprove this false conception as well as give an enriching account of Vietnamese modern history through an itinerary of locations exhibiting some of the country’s most exemplary artworks. This tour is the result of months of research made up of both primary and secondary research,
Where We Go
We’ll explore the prominence of confucianism, buddhism and daoism in Nguyen royal art forms and folk artisanry of 19th century Hue.
After gaining full control of Vietnam, French colonists exerted their influence in all aspects of life, not least in arts and the humanities. We’ll reflect how western artforms transformed artisans to artists.
In 1955, Vietnam was split in two. North Vietnam adopted the Soviet artform socialist realism to galvanise its population. South Vietnam flirted with trending western artforms which brought an intuitive understanding of the self and individualisation. We’ll assess both artforms as they were treated in their respective regions in Hue.
After reunification in 1975, Vietnam went through periods of internalisation and subsequently globalisation. We’ll reflect on art during these periods and artists came to encompass identity and personal-social issues within their artworks including introductions to artists that are based in Hue today.
