  • The Concept Behind Hue Grit Food Tour

The Grit Tour was never meant to include a food tour but when we found that the food culture of Hue was grossly misrepresented, we decided to do something about it. We take a different approach to our food tour and our guests have voiced their approval (Just see our reviews here). The things we do differently are as follows:

  • We take our guests to some of the best street food spots in Hue. These are places that were approved by our friends that live here. These are mostly small vendors but also include slightly bigger restuarants. All of the beaten track and made for local consumption.
  • Our main dishes are local specialties or originate from here meaning that if you take a food tour anywhere else in Vietnam, you shouldn't have any repeat dishes (and if you do, kindly tell them that food is from Hue!).
  • Our priorities are taste, cultural importance and social relevancy. Your comfort is secondary to this meaning that the food we provide on the tour couldn't be more authentic.
  • We are eager to tell you the stories behind each dish. Whether that is their history, the people who make them, how to eat them or how they are made. A lot of these aspects on food tours are greatly overlooked.
  • Like with all of our tours, we want to immerse you in a kinaesthetic experience. That means you leave with a range of new experiences as well as some knowledge too!

3. Pay on Arrival

Unless you have paid for your tour in advance, please prepare for the tour fee to pay at the meeting point. We only accept Vietnamese Dong. If you have any trouble with converting cash or finding an ATM, please let us know in advance and we will give you advice for this.

4. Suitable Walking Shoes

The walking on our tours is generally short. The longest is around 7 minutes at the beginning of the tour and continually decrease after this. The roads are uneven and can catch you off-guard. Please wear suitable footwear.

5. Clothing Suitable for the Climate; You're Going to Get Wet

If it is hot, wear cool clothing. If it is raining, wear clothing that dry quickly. These things are not essential but are advised.

We will provide umbrellas if it is raining.

6. Mosquitos

Mosquitos can be an issue at certian times of the year. If you are not wearing clothing that covers your legs and ankles, we advise you to use mosquito spray.

7. Hygiene and Comfort.

We have been told to encourage the vendors we visit to suit our clients but that goes against our 'staged authenticity' principle.

We're keeping it real!

That means some of  our locations are minimal on facilities such as WCs and air conditioning. Furthermore, hygiene can at times be below western expectations. Most people are not troubled by this while others bring hand santizer.

Our lovely hosts are great at facilitating their guests and do what they can and we will also do our best to point out available facilities at each location.

7. Transport Before and After the Tour.

Transport after the tour is included providing it is within 3km of the conlcuding location.

Transport to the meeting point is not included but we can pick you up for an additional fee.

8. Empty Stomachs!

We get through A LOT of food on this tour so be prepared to tickle those taste buds and open a few notches on that belt.

We want our guests to finish the tour FULL.

If you find love at first bite with one speicifc dish, don't hesitate to ask for more.

If you are still looking for more food at the end of the tour, tell us! And we can get you to one more location to fill that space.
